Yoga of 12-Step Recovery
an Embrace DC Social Initiative

“The issues live in our tissues”

The road to recovery is long and it changes over time. For those suffering from addiction mental, physical, and spiritual healing need to occur. Ceasing the activities of drinking, smoking, drug use as well as behaviors like gambling, internet gaming, online porn, and compulsive habits around food is only one of the twelve steps. For those suffering from codependency learning how to operate in relationships is just as challenging. I wanted to create a community in the District of Columbia for those on this path to be able to come together in community using the tools of yoga in tandem with the twelves step process.
Yoga is not just a physical practice; the yoga sutras offer a philosophy and tools to chip away at the coverings until we find our ability for self-compassion, gratitude, contentment and bliss which can lead to spiritual union. Finding yoga studios that permit these conversations are difficult to find, lucky for us Faith Hunter agreed to partner with me to create space for the Y12SR community in Washington DC. This studio holds a special place for me because it is where I learned how to stand on my own two feet while being taught, finding strength in community and understanding how a yoga community can support you – there is no need to travel this path alone.
Our meetings are open to all of the A’s as well as the people who love them. Each meeting includes an accessible yoga class, and a group sharing circle, modeled from the meetings of the 12-Step addiction recovery programs. Meetings are 90 minutes and offered biweekly on the 1st and 3rd Friday at 10PM and the 2nd and 4th Sunday at 2 PM. The 90-minute meeting will be split into two 45-minute sections with a brief break in between. The discussion portion will consist of a reading or topic with a group share. The yoga portion will consist of a brief meditation, breath work and a Yin/Restorative practice on Friday and a Hatha/Vinyasa class on Sunday. All sessions are accessible to all bodies and all levels (no yoga experience required). This is program is part of a holistic recovery program, working in tandem with traditional treatment to address the physical, mental and spiritual disease of addiction
The Embrace Yoga DC Program will start online on April 2, 2021 Due to COVID classes are currently being held on livestream.
All classes are donation-based, you are worth more than your money!
The donations collected are distributed to Embrace Yoga DC for providing the space and Thrive DC  to support their substance abuse counseling program.
